China Spring ISD Board of Trustees: June Meeting Summary

The China Spring ISD (CSISD) School Board met on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 6:00 pm. The School Board unanimously approved teacher pay raises and approved the 2024-25 budget.

During the June School Board Meeting, the China Spring ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the administration’s recommendation for an increase to the 2024-25 Teacher Pay Scale.

The approved pay raise provides a pay increase of $1,000 for each teacher step in the teacher pay scale, representing an average increase of 2-4%.

Hourly employees will receive a pay increase of $750, calculated out for their hourly rate, representing an average increase of 1.6-4.0%. Salaried employees will receive $1,000, representing an average increase of 0.8-1.3% increase.

Across Texas, districts are approving, on average, a 2% pay increase for staff. We believe the approved increase is a step in the right direction to remain competitive in staff recruitment and retention.

Vice President of the Board of Trustees, Jeff Bradburn, made the motion to approve the pay raises stating, “It’s not nearly enough [for our teachers and staff], but we are happy to approve raises.”

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the upcoming budget. According to a recent study conducted by the Texas Association of School Business Officials, nearly 80% of public school districts across Texas are facing budget challenges. Despite the growing rate of inflation, the state of Texas has not increased public school funding since 2019. China Spring ISD, like many public schools across the state, is working to do more with less funding.

The state of funding for public schools and the impact on our school’s budget is a concern for District officials and the Board of Trustees. China Spring ISD is creating a new program for the upcoming academic year, Champions for China Spring ISD. Champions for China Spring ISD is designed to create a positive partnership with the China Spring community, aimed at developing a culture of advocacy to support the future of students, teachers, and families in our district. This program will focus on educating community members about the state of public school finance and providing an insider look at the China Spring ISD budget.

China Spring ISD is looking for 35 community members to join the first cohort of Champions. Community members can find a complete description of Champions for China Spring ISD including meeting dates, times, and meeting topics at the Champions for China Spring ISD website: https://www.chinaspringisd.net/o/csisd/page/community-cohort.
