The China Spring ISD (CSISD) School Board met on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 6:00 pm.
During the August School Board meeting, China Spring ISD School Board and Administration recognized the China Spring ISD Special Olympics team, introduced the new China Spring Intermediate School resource officer, and adopted the 2024-25 tax rate.
Last year, Executive Director of Special Programs, Dr. Nickolas Smith, worked alongside district and campus administrators, teachers, and parents to launch the first Special Olympics team at China Spring ISD. The team is classified as a unified team, offering athletes with special needs the opportunity to practice and compete alongside students in general education. In May, the China Spring Special Olympics team competed at a regional track and field competition held at Killeen ISD. During the August School Board Meeting, China Spring ISD celebrated the work of our unified team and awarded each athlete an athletic patch. The following athletes were recognized: Matthew Wilson, Lane Fogle, Ashlyn Irwin, Tyler Salazar, Colin Ely, Reese Jenkins, and Westen Hopkins.
Members of the School Board welcomed Officer Michael Irving as the school resource officer for China Spring Intermediate School. Officer Irving started his career with the U.S. Navy and later pursued a career in law enforcement in 2005. During his time in law enforcement, Officer Irving has served as a patrol sergeant, lieutenant, and detective. China Spring ISD is committed to protecting the safety of our students and staff, the district has a full-time school resource officer assigned to every campus.
According to the property tax code section 26.05(b) China Spring ISD is required to complete a worksheet for determination of steps required for adoption of the tax rate. A school district’s tax rate is made up of two separate rates that support two separate funds: maintenance and operations (M&O) and interest and sinking (I&S). M&O taxes fund the general operations of the district such as salaries, electricity and utilities, supplies, and general maintenance of facilities. I&S taxes pay voter-approved debt like bonds that pay for new school facilities and renovations of existing facilities. While local school boards set local property tax rates, the Texas Legislature determines the amount of state funding to put into public education. As home values and local tax rates change, the amount of funding a school can receive does not change. As property values increase the percent of school district funding that is comprised of local tax dollars increases, but the amount of state funding a school may receive decreases. The 2024-25 M&O tax rate is $0.666900 and the I&S tax rate is $0.351596. The total tax rate is $1.018596. The new tax rate is lower than last year’s tax rate of $1.0213.
